Greetings from Athletics,
I can hardly believe summer is coming to an end and the fall season is nearly upon us. I would like to share a few important times for this upcoming school year.
High school fall sports officially kick off Monday August 11th. The first practice start times are below.
Prior to starting each season, all athletes need to have a completed MHSAA physical on file with the school. The forms can be picked up in the office or printed off the link below. Athletic Secretary Mandy Mutschler or I will be on site at the beginning of practices to collect any that need to be collected.
HS Cross Country 7:00 PM
HS Volleyball 6:00 PM
High School Football 8:00 AM
Cheer 5:00 PM
Middle School athletes will need the same form on file, however practices don't start for a few more weeks. More to come from your coaches.
Last but not least, one of my goals for this upcoming season is to increase participation in athletics this school year. Last year, 57% of our High School student body participated in at least one MHSAA sanctioned sport with five students participating in four or more.
This fall we will not be cutting any underclassmen who try out for any team. That being, said we want to place your athlete where they will get the most opportunity to play, so there are a few caveats of note.
Large numbers will generate a freshman team but a sophomore may play on a freshman team to fill out a lineup.
Juniors may play JV or varsity; our coaches will do the best to set up our young athletes for future success based on skill level and potential playing time at a certain level. We have had several juniors in past seasons play at the JV level and make meaningful contributions as seniors, even earning all conference honors.
Lastly, many exchange students arrive after the try out period, but we want to provide a solid opportunity for them to experience American sports. They will have the option to try out once they arrive and can be placed on JV or varsity depending on skill level.
These methods are commonplace in larger schools and schools with high levels of participation, ultimately providing a great experience for our student athletes.
Thank you and Go Redhawks!
Mr. Jason Ricket, SCS Athletic Director
